City Council General Election May 6, 2017

Candidate filing opens on Wednesday, January 18th for two City Council terms.  Councilmembers are elected to serve three year terms with a term limit of two consecutive terms. To file as a candidate, a completed application must be submitted to the City Secretary by Friday, February 17, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Applications can be obtained from City Secretary Jo Ann Touchstone at City Hall, 1102 Lohmans Crossing, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

To be eligible to run for City Council, Candidates must meet the qualifications in the City Charter, Section 3:02:

All office holders for city elective office shall possess the following qualifications:

(a)        Meet all the requirements for public office prescribed by State and Federal laws.

(b)        Be a registered voter residing in the City for at least one year prior to the election.

(c)        Be at least twenty one years of age by the date of the election.

(d)       Shall not hold any other compensated public office if elected.

(e)        Shall not be a city employee, contractor or supplier.

(f)        If a member of the Council shall cease to possess any of the qualifications prescribed, the person shall forfeit the office.
