Big Band Bash - 2016
Lakeway Activity Center - 105 Cross Creek
Doors open at 7:30 PM

Put on your dancing shoes and bring your own beverages and snacks (champagne and caviar!) to the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek Road. Enjoy big band music from the 17-piece Republic of Texas Big Band, featuring David Cummings and Lisa Clark on vocals. This event is free and open to all ages. Donations to the band are encouraged. Sponsored by the Lakeway Arts Committee.

Scheduled dates for 2016 -  all dates are on the second Monday of the month.
January 11th, February 8th, March 14th, April 11th, May 9th, June 13th, July 11th, August 8th, September 12th, October 10th, November 14th and December 12th.

Tickets must be purchased in advance.  LAC Members $90/person  -  Non-members $110/person
Doors open at 5:30 PM.  Event will be underway from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

This series aims to enrich the perspectives of area residents by delivering thought-provoking and informational programs in the areas of science, technology, history, business, current events, and the arts in an entertaining and socially engaging atmosphere. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. Call 512- 261-1010 to sign up. Entertainment/dinner is $90 for the series for Activity Center members and $110 for the series for non-members.

November 20, 2016 - Colonel William James Gregory, USAF (Ret) presents "Reflections of a U-2 Pilot"  -  After completion of flight training at Randolph Field in San Antonio, Col. Gregory was assigned to the 49th Fighter Squadron (P-38 Lightning), North Africa, completing 50 combat missions by 1943.  As a Command pilot, he was also a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars with a 35 year military career spanning some of the most significant chapters of the development of aviation.  He piloted 55 different airplanes while in the Air Force.  Col Gregory's leadership of the previously classified U-2 program earned him the CIA Medal of Merit from President John F. Kennedy and his second of four Legions of Merit.  His continued command of top secret U-2 missions provided surveillance images detailing mounting tensions in Vietnam.  Featured caterer this evening:  Casa Chapala Mexican Restaurant

January 15, 2017 - Rusty Reames presents "Austin Blackhawks - Blind Baseball" -  Beep baseball is baseball for the blind or visually impaired.  All players wear masks during play to make everyone equal.  The Austin Blackhawks are nine time World Champions and have finished in the top three 14 times in 29 attempts.  They have travelled to Canada, Puerto Rico, Taiwan (twice) and the Dominican Republic as well as across the USA.  Featured caterer this evening:  Pok-e-Jo's Smokehouse

February 19, 2017 - Dave Schafer presents "National Parks"  -   We celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service in 2016.  In "Linked by Fate and Friendship:  Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson", Dave Schafer will describe the many links connecting President Truman and President Johnson.  They differed in temperament and personality but shared many similarities, including promoting and supporting our National Parks system.  Mr. Schafer has been a National Parks ranger for 31 years.  His career includes a tour of duty from 1992 - 1999 at Harry S. Truman National Historic Site in Independence, MO and from 1999 - 2006, he worked at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and also served at the USS Arizona Memorial Park in Honolulu, HI.  He returned in 2014 to become the LBJ Park's Chief of Interpretation and Resource Management and oversees the operations of LBJ's boyhood home, the LBJ Ranch and the Texas White House.  Featured caterer this evening:  Mangieri's Pizza Cafe

March 19, 2017  -  Edward B. Nelson, MD, PhD, FACP presents "Consumer Medications - Fads, Fiction & Facts"  -  Dr. Nelson was born in Altoona, PA and received a degree in biochemistry from Penn State.  After finishing medical school at UTMB and residency training, he joined the medical faculty at State University of NY at Buffalo and subsequently, the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.  Later, he joined Merck Research Laboratories in PA, and then McNeil Consumer Pharmaceuticals, a part of Johnson & Johnson as Vice President of Research and Development, from which he retired in 2004.  He is the author of over 80 scientific publications, ranging from plant biology and drug metabolism to Alzheimer's Disease, and holds six patents.  He was a member of the FDA Non-Prescription Drug Advisory Committee from 2008 - 2011.  Dr. Nelson and his wife, Kirsten, moved to Lakeway in 2008.  Featured caterer this evening:  AllStar Burger

Come to the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, to purchase tickets for the annual Breakfast With Santa!  Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be meeting children individually and the price of admission includes breakfast, a toy for each child and a photo of each child with Santa.  The breakfast will be catered by Santana's Catering.  The meal for the adults will consist of a breakfast taco with salsa, fruit salad, coffee and juice.  The children's meal will consist of a sausage link wrapped in a pancake with butter and syrup, fruit salad and juice.   Emcee for the event this year will be Bill Dickson.

Tickets are $15 each and are available as follows:
November 7th - 16th - Tickets may be purchased by Lakeway Activity Center members only.
November 17th - Tickets may be purchased by the general public.

Please arrange to pick up your tickets before the day of the event.

The City of Lakeway Arts Committee hosts a series of lunchtime concerts to help citizens escape the winter doldrums.  Pack a lunch, bring a friend and come enjoy some excellent entertainment!  No charge.

January 5th - The Reel Sheboygan  -  A symphony conductor and friends play popular music from the 1950's, 60's and 70's.

January 12th
- Albert and Gage - Roots rock/fold with French spice.

January 19th - Barbara Calderero & The Highlights - Jazzy, favorite songs.

January 26th
- Matt Wilson - Piano/Vocals -  This great entertainer will have you rockin'!

February 2nd - Lake Travis Fiddlers  -  Country and fold songs by accomplished fiddlers and singers.

February 9th - Red Young Quartet featuring Silvie Rider, Vocals - Classy, popular songs.

February 16th - Robert "Beto" Skiles Quartet featuring Shawnda Birch, Vocals - Popular songs with a taste of jazz.

February 23rd - The Second Line Jazz Band - A Mardi Gras celebration with one of the best traditional jazz bands.

The 10' x 10' space fee is $25 for Activity Center members and $35 for non-members (includes 1 table with 1 chair). Space is limited. Call 512-261-1010.  Admission is free but we gladly accept donations of non-perishable or canned food items in the lobby which will be donated to local food banks and charities. Food banks are at an all time low and your food donations are greatly appreciated.

Tips for Shoppers
1.  Bring a list of what you are looking for so that you can focus on searching for those items.
2.  If you are looking for a large piece of furniture, don't forget to bring an old blanket, tie-down rope and a red flag so that you can transport it home.
3.  Shop smart and shop quickly by bringing plenty of $1 and $5 bills.
4.  If you see something you like, pick it up while you decide whether or not to purchase it.  Otherwise, another buyer may pick it up and buy it out from under you.
5.  Don't be afraid to bargain down the price if you feel it's too high.  .  .  it's all part of the fun!
6.  Get better deals by buying in bulk.  Group your purchases together and offer the seller one price for the lot.
7.  If there is something you want that is out of your price range, give the seller your contact information and let them know that if the item isn't sold at the end of the day, your offer still stands.

Lakeway Activity Center - 105 Cross Creek  - 10 AM to 1 PM

Summer is just around the corner!  Are you looking for activities and day camps in the Lakeway area?  This event will familiarize children and their parents about the classes and camps that are being offered at the Lakeway Activity Center over the summer.  A special exhibit TBD will be set up in the ballroom.  Around the perimeter of the room, tables full of instructors will offer hands-on introductions to their classes. Participating exhibitors to be announced.  Try them out and take the opportunity to sign up for classes!  Also available.  .  .   a complimentary hot dog lunch in the courtyard and face-painting!  Everyone is welcomed. There is no entrance fee for this event so come by for some summer fun!  No dogs please.
