Lakeway Firewise Committee
Call for Volunteers

Efforts to mitigate the risk of wildfires in our town can succeed only if the community is convinced that there is a real danger to properties and is willing to take proactive measures to address those risks.  As such the Firewise Communities program was set up as a voluntary effort. That means neighborhood volunteers.  Hence, the evolving Firewise Committee is seeking the active participation of residents in the Firewise program.  This is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved in efforts to help ensure the safety of your own property and of the town in general.  There are several ways to volunteer and get involved (see Mission Statement for a complete list and description) in these worthy efforts, namely:

  • Serving on the Firewise Board (in particular we hope to identify an education and training specialist, who could lead that important Firewise  Training Sub-program);
  • Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) assessment specialists (training would be offered to interested volunteers) who would help provide neighbors helpful advice on how to reduce wildfire risks around their own properties;
  • Fuel reduction projects (i.e., Firewise Days) volunteers, to help remove dead vegetation (fuel) from public parks and spaces that have been identified as high risk in terms of fuel load;
  • Home Owner Associations or neighborhood efforts to reduce risks in and around specific properties, mainly by helping to coordinate neighborhood committees and fuel reduction efforts;
  • Public Awareness activity coordination (i.e., 4th of July event; annual Firewise Days; banner production; and any other awareness raising kinds of activities)
