Austin electric rate increase will affect 2,500 Lakeway residents
On June 7, 2012, the Austin City Council adopted new electric rates for Austin Energy customers. According to numbers published by the City of Austin, residential customers will see an 11.6 percent increase (on average) in their electric bills when the new rates take effect on October 1, 2012. There are approximately 2,500 Austin Energy customers residing in Lakeway who will be affected by the increase.

Since Austin Energy customers who live outside of the City of Austin have no voice in rate increases through their elected officials, the Texas Public Utility Commission provides a way for those customers to appeal rate increases through a proceeding with the commission. That process is initiated by petitioning the Public Utility Commission for a review. The petition must include signatures from at least five percent of the approximately 45,000 out-of-city customers.

An organization known as Homeowners United for Rate Fairness (HURF) is leading an effort to file such a petition with the PUC and challenge the rate increase. Suburban customers who would like to sign the petition can do so by contacting HURF at www.hurf.org. Lakeway residents can also sign petitions at Lakeway City Hall, 1102 Lohmans Crossing, and the Lakeway Activity Center at 105 Cross Creek Drive, Lakeway, Texas, 78734.

Please note that the City of Lakeway is not affiliated with HURF, and does not endorse HURF or its position on this or any other issue. Residents should educate themselves on this issue and make their own decision regarding participation in the petition drive.
