Code Compliance Rules

COMMON CODE VIOLATIONS

Your Lakeway Code Compliance team is here to help residents achieve voluntary conformance with city ordinances. Before referring matters to Lakeway Municipal Court and receiving a possible fine, warning letters requesting compliance are sent as a first attempt at resolution. Our team strives to help residents understand and fix issue before they become a bigger problem. Here are the top five most frequent code violations:

  1. Boats, RVs, etc. parked on lot (30.04.24)
  2. Obstructing right-of-way (18.05)
  3. For Sale (& commercial) signs (26.04)
  4. Neglecting property maintenance (10.04)
  5. Conducting work without permit (26.02.081)

Additionally, here are some ways you can do your part to avoid some of the most common violations:

  • Keep your lawns neatly mowed and free of trash or debris.
  • Store trash and recycle cans out of sight.
  • Dispose of brush and tree trimmings.
  • Check permit requirements before starting any project.
  • Park vehicles in designated areas.
  • Park boats, trailers, jet skis, RVs and similar vehicles off-site.
  • Dispose of oak trees killed by oak wilt.

Tree Pruning

AVOID OAK PRUNING

If you're new to Lakeway, be prepared to hear this phrase in the coming days: "Never Prune February through June!" Starting next week (Wed., Feb. 1), oak pruning will not be allowed in Lakeway until summer. Spring is typically the highest risk season for new oak wilt infections due to an increase in sap feeding beetles, and more susceptibility for fungal mats to form in moderate temperatures and high humidity. Pruning from February through June not only could harm our tree population, but it's also prohibited by City ordinance, with a possible fine not to exceed $1,000 per day. Here are some additional tips for preventing oak wilt:

  • Avoid oak wilt-infected firewood.
  • Destroy infected red oaks before they make spores.
  • Paint all wounds on oaks immediately.
  • Prune when the risk is low and permissible (extreme heat or cold is best).
