January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and the Lakeway Police Department is raising awareness about this crime throughout the month by wearing blue ribbons. At the last City Council meeting, Mayor Kilgore presented a proclamation regarding Human Trafficking Month to Lakeway Police Chief Glen Koen. By announcing January as Human Trafficking Month, it helps raise awareness about this crime and gives an opportunity to educate the public about how to identify and prevent cases like this. Human Trafficking includes both forced labor and sex trafficking, with an estimated 24.9 million adults and children subjected to this crime worldwide, and grossing about $150 billion a year. Some signs of someone who may be a victim of Human Trafficking include physical abuse showing bruises, wounds in various stages of healing and mutilations, along with other indicators like a victim being accompanied by another person who is controlling, or a victim that refuses to make eye contact or seems afraid to speak in the presence of others. If you think someone may be a victim of Human Trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-2423. The Lakeway Police Department also has a dedicated Victim Assistant Coordinator on staff, and if you would like to reach out you can call (512) 261-2800. CLICK HERE for some additional information
