Lakeway Municipal Court recently received its ninth Traffic Safety Award from the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center (TMCEC) in conjunction with TxDOT. Just over 30 other small Texas cities have received the award over the years, but Lakeway currently ranks at the top for the most awards in the low volume courts category.
TMCEC's Municipal Traffic Safety Initiatives purpose is to prevent impaired driving through Texas municipal courts. This is achieved by offering impaired driving courses at judicial education seminars and through webinars, distributing free anti-DUI and DWI books and materials, and recognizing as models those municipal courts that demonstrate excellence in impaired driving prevention. MTSI plays an integral role in preventing impaired driving and making Texas roads safer.
One of those initiatives with Lakeway includes the Reality Education for Drivers (RED) program in partnership with Baylor Scott & White - Lakeway. This is a four-hour program offered to local teen drivers and taught by hospital staff to bring awareness to traffic issues. It includes a tour of the trauma unit of the hospital. The program was started in early 2020. Additionally, Judge Kevin Madison continues to serve as an On-Call Magistrate for Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) Officers, along with being a volunteer first responder firefighter-EMT and assists the Texas Game Wardens as needed.
