WWII Veterans Honored

Veteran Victor Filimon honored and pictures with Mayor Sandy Cox

On September 2, 1945, formal surrender documents by Imperial Japan were signed aboard the USS Missouri, bringing the official close to World War II. On this 75th anniversary, volunteers with the ad hoc Standing Military Committee, supported by the Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the DAR safely delivered nearly 50 signed certificates of appreciation, commemorative coins and booklets to veterans and/or their families in the Lakeway area. The project was organized by city archivist, Mike Boston. Lakeway Mayor Sandy Cox safely delivered those honors in person to nearly one dozen of the living WWII veterans in the community. Of those living veterans, one recently turned 105 (Victor Filimon; pictured).

Other living veterans honored today:

  • William Cobb
  • Richard Drury (served also in the Korean and Vietnam Wars)
  • Joseph Haas
  • Thomas Keel
  • Thomas Knauer
  • Jack McClaran (served also in the Korean and Vietnam Wars)
  • Don Menard
  • Pat Pavone
  • Maurice Williams
  • William Williams

Thank you to all of the brave veterans in our community. We truly appreciate your service and sacrifices!
