We want to protect the health and safety of our residents and green space. As a friendly reminder, we are currently in ’no trimming’ season for oak trees. Pruning or cutting of oak trees is prohibited in the Spring months of February through June in Lakeway due to fungal spore formation and beetle activity being highest during these months. This can cause new oak wilt infections. The ordinance is in place to protect the safety of our residents and property along with the health of the oak trees. Pruning and cutting can begin again in July. If any part of an oak tree poses a safety hazard to people or property, please contact our City Forester and Code Compliance team at (512) 314-7500 or click here for more information. They would need to ensure authorized cuts are sealed within 10 minutes of the cut with pruning spray. Thank you for helping ensure our beautiful tree population remains healthy!
So when is the best time to prune oaks? The safest time is during the coldest winter months of November, December and early January. Oak pruning should be scheduled during this period whenever possible. The second best time to prune oaks is in July and August during scorching summer temperatures. September and October carry a higher risk level than the hottest and coldest periods, but not as high as the springtime months of February through June. Prune with caution when temperatures are moderate.
