Viewpoints Speakers Series Launches 20th Season This October

A discussion on national security and terrorism kicks of the 20th season of Viewpoints, Lakeway’s distinguished speakers dinner series. The new season begins on October 20, 2019 at the Lakeway Activity Center with Fred Burton, one of the world’s foremost authorities on security and terrorism. He is the Chief Security Officer for Stratfor, a geopolitical intelligence platform based here in Central Texas. Burton is one of five distinguished speakers slated to present at this season’s series.

The popular series takes place at the Lakeway Activity Center on the third Sunday night of October, November, January and February along with the 5th Sunday in March of 2020. It includes five catered dinners and five speakers. “Our mission is to enrich the perspectives of Lakeway residents by delivering thought-provoking and informational speaker programs in the areas of science, history, business, current events and the arts in an entertaining and socially engaging atmosphere,” Viewpoints speaker committee chairman Tom Cain said.

So, what else can you expect?

Do you love movies? Stephen Harvill will present a unique presentation in November taking you through the elements of our movie experiences. From the narrative to the music to even the emotions and psychology of film, this presentation will give you a different perspective next time you go to the local theater.

History will kick off the 2020 speaker program with a discussion from Bill Hawkins, a 22 year Lakeway resident. Hawkins currently serves on Lakeway’s Heritage Committee, conducts the Heritage Trail Tours coming up this September and has even written a book documenting his family’s heritage. This unique presentation will give you a new perspective on Lakeway’s past.

Opioid addiction is a big issue here in the U.S. In February, Richard Bottner from Dell Medical School at UT Austin will give a presentation on the opioid crisis. He will also discuss the role of hospitals in treating this epidemic.

And rounding out this season is a discussion on a big topic here in Texas – oil and gas. Dr. Mark Houston is a registered geoscientist and Lakeway resident focused on subsurface imaging technology development for both field and interpretation applications. Join in this presentation as Dr. Houston discusses the rapid emergence of shale oil and gas.

Season tickets are now available at the Lakeway Activity Center at $115 per person for Activity Center members and $135 for non-members. Save $10 if you register by Sept. 13.
