The Lakeway Heritage Committee’s history series continues with a free presentation about the World of Tennis and the city’s tennis history at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Lake Travis Community Library, 1938 Lohmans Crossing.
Cliff Drysdale, top world-ranked tennis professional during the 1960s and ’70s and the World of Tennis’ first touring pro, will share his insights into this exciting time in Lakeway’s history.
In 1970, Dallas real estate developer Robert Alpert purchased the Lakeway Company. Alpert’s vision included adding a “world-class tennis facility” to the Lakeway Inn, which is now the Lakeway Resort and Spa. Alpert’s partnership with Lamar Hunt and Al Hill Jr. created the World of Tennis in 1972, home to the World Championship Tennis (WCT) professional tour.
“We are pleased to be working with Cliff Drysdale and Lake Travis Community Library to bring this part of the city’s history to the public,” said Bill Hawkins, Lakeway Heritage Committee member. “Come meet the pro who was instrumental in putting Lakeway on the tennis map.”
An additional installment in this series is set for March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Lake Travis Community Library.
