Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays, but it became even more meaningful for our family 19 years ago. On Nov. 24, 1999, our daughter, Reilly, was born an hour and 30 minutes shy of Thanksgiving. Both my husband’s parents and my parents were waiting all day for her arrival. There were complications which made the process even more lengthy, but in the end you all can imagine what we were thankful for that year (and every year since).
This year, I have something new to add to the long list of things that I’m thankful for: being your Mayor. I never in a million years thought that I would ever end up in politics. However, I knew I could put my skills to use and lead the City of Lakeway through a time of high growth, opportunity, and prosperity.
In the last five months, we have opened the doors for more community participation and dialog. The city has launched new initiatives to communicate with the community through town hall meetings, surveys, newsletters, and blogs. Thank you, Public Engagement Advisory Committee! Additionally, we have opened our committee meetings to the public so that anyone may attend and contribute. I am thankful for the hundreds of volunteers who keep our city both vibrant and amazing.
Our Wildlife Advisory Committee has paused the deer management program for a year to reevaluate the program in order to understand the “What” to do and to then explore the “How” to do it. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee has started to create the timeline and process that we will use to create the next 20-year Plan that will link to a financial and operational plan. To support this work, each of the other city committees are working to create their vision in their disciplines such as the Parks Master Plan and Future Land Use Plan.
Development has been at the forefront of our discussions. In the near term, we must continue to improve our internal road infrastructure as well as the safety of RM 620. All of this must be accomplished while being mindful of the RM 620 expansion four years from now. We must also take the opportunity to work with developers to create new amenities for Lakeway residents that will fit with the charm and aesthetics of our community. We know from our survey results that green space, festival space and gathering points are important to our residents.
And, we have so much more work to be done. Thank you for your support and vote of confidence. It is an absolute privilege to lead the City of Lakeway.
From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
