In order to keep residents, visitors and our beautiful white-tailed deer safe, the city has passed an ordinance prohibiting their feeding. By following this ordinance, you will help reduce the the potential for negative interactions in residential areas and you will encourage the deer to adhere to their normal diet. Studies have shown that feeding deer can be detrimental to their health.
Ordinance 2005-01-17-1 prohibits the feeding of deer; provides for the deer population control measures; and provides for penalties for intentional disruption of deer control activities.
- Purposely feeding and providing food through a ground feeding station, salt lick, or by other means, to wild deer in the City of Lakeway on private or public land is prohibited.
- It is illegal to place wheat, pelleted livestock food, corn in any form, fruit, vegetables, hay or alfalfa, human food, scraps any form of commercially sold wildlife feed, birdseed, or livestock feed, or, any other edible matter that deer will consume (not including live vegetation such as ornamental landscaping or flowers) on the ground, or within reach of deer. This does not apply to edible matter that is located either in an enclosed building or stored in a sealed package.
- Any person who vilates the provisions of this city ordinance commits a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $1 and not more than $500.
